Heineken Importer rights are challenged in Court

Interesting case going on in the Tanzanian Courts centered around the rights of Maribo Wines the Heineken distributor to be the sole importer and supplier of the precious beverage.

It all started after a retail Company -Baraka Stores imported two containers of Heineken beers from Dubai last year.
As Baraka Stores was in the process of clearing the containers from Dar es Salaam Port they were told by the Tanzania Revenue Authority that they cannot enter the market because Mabibo Beers, Wines & Spirits is the only company with exclusive rights to import and distribute Heineken in the country.

Baraka Stores then lodged a succesful complaint that was upheld by the Tanzanian Competition Tribunal.

Aggrieved by the Tribunal`s decision, Mabibo Wines has filed an application for revision of the decision in the Court of Appeal. Where the case now sits. The Beer? that’s still sitting in the Port awaiting clearance.

Beverage Export Managers responsible for African markets better watch this space!
