Responsible for the strategic sourcing of wine grapes – approximately $15-30 million dollars on an annual basis – supervision of grower and owned vineyard operations, developing and implementing wine grape quality improvement programs, developing and maintaining relationships with growers, in depth knowledge of wine grape market conditions and perform other operations as needed as it relates to wine grape supply/demand, wine grape quality and grower equity.
Key Outputs/Critical Deliverables:
¨ Responsible for the sourcing, negotiation, execution and management of all Diageo Grape Contracts in Monterey County, San Benito County and San Luis Obispo County (Paso Robles AVA).
¨ Work with the Senior Manager of Grower Relations to develop and execute the Diageo Supply/Demand Strategy by providing relevant market, pricing and supply conditions.
¨ Develop and maintain relationships with growers. Participate in the organization of grower events that build grower relationships such as Grower Feedback Loop, Grower Workshops, Dinners, and Pre and Post Crush events.
¨ Strive to always increase grape quality from all purchased and owned vineyards.
¨ Make regular vineyard/grower visits throughout the season, including winemaking staff. On a quarterly basis, review Vineyard Plans to ensure that they are being followed correctly and/or make additional requests/modifications to address current issues. Monitor crop development and provide timely crop estimate forecasts.
¨ Hire, train and manage 1-3 seasonal grape maturity samplers to provide timely and accurate Brix samples to facilitate harvest decisions.
¨ Direct all regional harvest activities working closely with Diageo schedulers, winemakers, and maturity samplers.
¨ Maintain good communication with all members of the Grower Relations, Vineyard Operations and Winemaking Departments.
¨ Take direct responsibility for the regional Classification Tasting program. Coordinate the internal CT tastings and ensure the data is properly captured.
¨ Write detailed Vineyard Plans for each grower on a yearly basis.
¨ Represent Diageo in all legal disputes/actions with growers. Work with Diageo legal in all contractual disputes to ensure that Diageo assets/values are protected.
¨ Participate in industry events and symposia that present valuable information on improving grape quality, competitor activities and market conditions.
