Carlsberg, the Danish brewer, intends to expand in Asia to help reduce its exposure to a volatile Russian beer market, its chief executive said in an interview with the Financial Times today.

Carlsberg, intends to expand in Asia to help reduce its exposure to a volatile Russian market.

“We do see Asia as being a place to expand and invest in,” Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen said.

He added that a stronger business in Asia which currently accounts for 10 percent of Carlsberg’s sales volumes and 17 percent of operating profits — would balance the company’s exposure to Russia, which contributes about half its profits.

Russia’s economy is suffering a sharp contraction amid the worst global slump since the 1930s.
