DFV Wines, a 3rd generation family-owned wine company with 85 years of experience in California winemaking and winegrowing, is pleased to announce an exclusive partnership with Bodegas Baigorri to import Baigorri wines into the U.S. marketplace.
Located in the heart of Rioja, Bodegas Baigorri embraces a fusion of old world tradition and new world winemaking. The winery was the vision of founder Jesus Baigorri and renowned Basque architect Inaki Aspiazu, who set out to create a space that integrates stunning architecture, gentle winemaking, and the rugged Rioja Alavesa landscape. Using extreme natural elements of glass, steel and concrete, the winery exhibits spectacular contemporary design. With the winemaking process in mind, the actual concrete winery plunges eight floors below ground to support a gravity-fed operation. Today, this spectacular property is owned by Pedro Martinez.
“Rioja is on the rise, and Bodegas Baigorri is a fantastic representation of the region’s world class vineyards and modern winemaking practices,” said Chris Indelicato, CEO of DFV Wines. “Baigorri is a progressive, innovative partner, which, at the end of the day, prides itself on quality, and showcasing the excellent fruit that is characteristic of their region. We are really excited about bringing these wines to the U.S. market.”
The wines of Bodegas Baigorri are produced from Rioja’s benchmark sub-region, Rioja Alavesa. Protected by the Cantabrian Mountains, Rioja Alavesa boasts the highest elevation and coolest temperatures of Rioja’s three sub-regions, and is known for its rugged, chalky soil and sloping landscape. The mountains have a tempering effect on the climate, shielding the region from harsh winds, high precipitation and extreme temperature variations throughout the year. Rioja Alavesa is known for producing thinner-skinned Tempranillo grapes than other regions of Rioja – these grapes result in intensely aromatic wines suitable for drinking immediately as well as aging.
At Bodegas Baigorri, showcasing the region’s distinct terroir is crucial. The grapes are gently handled at each stage of the winemaking process. To avoid any damage during harvest, they are hand picked, hand sorted, and hand processed without the use of any machinery like hoppers or pumps. Gentle handling, native yeasts, long maceration, minimal post fermentation treatment and a judicious use of French oak all result in wines that are intense, full flavored and elegant.
DFV Wines will import three Baigorri wines, Crianza (SRP $22), Reserva (SRP $35) and Baigorri De Garage (SRP $60), to select markets nationwide.
