Carlsberg Denies Building a new Brewery in Ukraine

Danish brewing company Carlsberg has finally denied intentions  to build a new factory in Kharkov despite recent reports of the Ukrainian media. The company sees no prospects for increased production due to the crisis and decreasing beer consumption in Ukraine.

Last week, during an investment forum IFIK held in Kharkov some experts stated that Carlsberg Group “is planning invest $30-40 million to build its plant in the region. However according to Slavutich Carlsberg Group CEO Peter Chernyshov, the company has abandoned plans to build its new Ukrainian plant.

Slavutich” Carlsberg Group announced its intent to “to build a new factory near  Kharkov with the initial capacity to process 1 million hectoliters of beer a year” in June last year. According to Chernyshov, the projected amount of investments was estimated at the level of 55 million euros.

Currently Slavutich “Carlsberg Group” sees no prospects for increased production. Since the second half of 2008, the level of beer consumption in Ukraine has started to decline. According to the official market data, during the 9 months of the current year, beer production fell by 14% compared to the same period of last year – up to 242 million dal.

Slavutich Carlsberg Group” is the third largest beer producer in Ukraine, in 2008, it occupied a 23.5% market share in volume terms.
