Diageo Faces Boycott Over Rum Plans

Diageo is facing a boycott of its spirits brands in protest at its future production plans – in Puerto Rico.

The National Puerto Rican Coalition – which promotes the well-being of Puerto Ricans living at home and in the US – has called for a boycott over plans to switch production of Captain Morgan rum from Puerto Rico to the US Virgin Islands in 2012.

The NPRC says the move could have a negative impact on the image and stability of its domestic rum trade.

NPRC president Rafael Fantauzzi, said he hoped to get support for the protest from within the US.

He said: “If the Puerto Rican community on the island exercise their consumer purchasing power in support of an industry that has elevated our economy and our image in the global arena, I’m sure the mainland consumers will join our efforts.”
