Drivers in Australia Enjoy Free Soft Drinks

Designated drivers in Australia are enjoying free soft drinks over the festive period in an attempt to reduce the instances of drink driving in the country.

Those driving wear wrist bands to make themselves known to the bar staff of participating pubs.

The scheme will run until January 3rd 2010 and has been welcomed by the Australian Hotels Association.

Speaking to the Australian Associated Press (AAP), Sally Fielke, chief executive officer at Australian Hotels Association, said: “If you choose to have a few drinks over the Christmas holiday period, plan ahead and make sure you organise a designated driver or arrange to get a taxi or public transport home.”

However, last week, the Daily Advertiser reported that pubs in Wagga, New South Wales, had responded ‘unenthusiastically’ to the scheme.

Coca-Cola’s Designated Driver campaign is currently running in the UK and the company’s website includes a map which displays the participating pubs and bars.
