Diageo Appoints Control States Director

Diageo has appointed a control states executive. Lynn Walding will take up the post of executive director control states effective immediately. Walding has recently stepped down as administrator of the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division. This new position will support Diageo's critical social responsibility, responsible drinking, and corporate citizenship activities within the control state community. Walding will work for Guy Smith, executive vice president, corporate relations and Ken Lane, vice president, state government affairs, and will be part of the control state leadership team under the direction of Mark Hubler, president, control states. Ketel One Launches Orange Vodka

Ketel One vodka has introduced Ketel One Oranje, an orange flavoured vodka. The launch coincided with Queen's Day, a national holiday in the Netherlands honouring the Queen's official birthday, which is widely celebrated. The colour orange is everywhere as it represents the royal family name - The Family Nassau, House of Orange. Ketel One Oranje contains essence of natural orange. Ketel One Oranje, pronounced "Oh-RON-yah" in Dutch, is produced at the Nolet Distillery in Schiedam, Holland. [...more]

Global Brands Acquires Inspirit Brands

VK producer Global Brands has acquired Inspirit Brands as it looks to move into the premium end of the market. The premium market is still a challenging one, but as consumers are still willing to pay for quality, this deal puts Global Brands in a good position to capitalise as the market recovers," said Global Brands MD Derek Mackey. Four Roses Bourbon and El Dorado Rum are among the fourteen brands to join Global Brand's existing portfolio. Tony Mair, formerly a director at Diageo, will join Inspirit as chairman. Pernod Third Quarter Results

Pernod Ricard has announced that its consolidated sales for the third quarter 2009/10 are up 14% go €1,538 million compared the same period in 2008/9. This meant 16% organic growth, a 2% positive foreign exchange effect and a 3% negative group structure effect. The company says the reulsts are due to: - significant increase in consumption in new economies; - improved situation in some key markets, US, Russia, duty free, for example; - favourable "technical effects" such as destocking in 3rd quarter 2008/9, earlier easter and later Chinese new year celebrations. The company goes on to state: The 15 strategic brands grew at a faster rate of 21% over the quarter. [...more]

The Spirit of Speyside whisky festival starts this week. Now in its 11th year, the festival is celebrating the news that global exports of Scotch whisky reached record levels in 2009, despite the economic downturn, and that visitor numbers to Scotland's whisky distilleries also increased. Figures published recently by the Scotch Whisky Association reveal exports rose by 3% in value to £3.13billion, contributing £99 every second to the UK trade balance. [...more]

The 2010 Ballantine's Championship golf tournament has been won by Australia's Marcus Fraser. With his final round of 69, Fraser finished four shots clear of the field. He received the Ballantine's Championship trophy and a winner's cheque for €367,500 from Chivas Brothers commercial director Paul Scanlon. "This year's tournament is historic for the world's No2 Scotch whisky brand," said Scanlon, "as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first Ballantine's golf tournament, which took place at Wentworth in 1960." Liviko is to become the sole representative of Bacardi-Martini Group's products in Estonia. From May 17, AS Liviko will become the sole importer and representative of Bacardi-Martini in Estonia. Its subsidiary SIA Liviko took over representative rights for the group's products in Latvia in January this year. Alejandro Ouziel, area director of Bacardi-Martini, said: "We have entrusted the representation of Bacardi-Martini to Liviko in addition to Latvia also in Estonia, because Liviko's growth on the Baltic markets and its work with its brands has been impressive and we believe it will ensure that our quality products will reach consumers on these markets, which have great potential. C&C Sells Spirits Division To William Grant

C&C Group, the Irish drinks producer behind Magners cider, has sold its spirits and liqueurs division to William Grant, the group behind Glenfiddich, for Eu300m (£259m), it was revealed this Friday. The division includes a complementary portfolio of premium niche brands - Tullamore Dew, Carolans, Frangelico and Irish Mist - which it said are exported to over 80 international markets. The company, which last year paid Eu45m for Gaymers cider, said it would use the proceeds of the disposal to pay down debt. For the year ended 28 February 2009, the division generated revenue of Eu85.9m, ebitda before exceptional items of Eu16.1m and ebit before exceptional items of Eu15.3m. Stephen Glancey, C&C's chief operating officer, added: "While the division represents a comparatively small component of C&C‚s overall earnings, the consideration reflects the quality of its brand portfolio and its strong market positions. Halewood’s Sidekick Is Set To Go Long

Halewood International has repositioned its Sidekick brand to cash in on the demand for long drinks and pitchers. The brand is being given a new strapline: "Mix'd Your Way" to highlight that, in addition to a traditional shot, Sidekick is also suitable for long drink consumption with a mixer or as a cocktail ingredient in a sharing pitcher. The move is the latest in a series of steps taken by Halewood to move away from the single shot market. Around 18 months ago, the company reduced the alcohol content for the brand by about 30% to an ABV of 14.5%. [...more]

Disaronno liqueur is to enjoy a £3million marketing push. The national advertising campaign will include summer TV advertising and the platform is called Open the Possibilities. Doubling its annual media spend, the campaign will focus on Disaronno's style credentials and also promote its versatility. The Open the Possibilities campaign will start in May with a 20-second TV commercial, which will be aired across both terrestrial and digital TV channels.
