AB InBev To Resume Talks To End Belgian Blockade

AB InBev To Resume Talks To End Belgian Blockade

Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI.BR), the world's largest brewer, said on Monday it would resume talks with trade unions on Tuesday to end a blockade at its Belgian breweries, aiming to resolve a dispute over job cuts. The group said on Friday it had won a court ruling to end a blockade at one of its large Belgian plants and unions responded that they would strike if it were enforced. The Belgian workers have blocked the entrances to the company's large plants in Leuven and Jupille for over a week and at Hoegaarden since last Tuesday in protest at AB InBev's plan to cut a net 263 jobs out of its 2,700 Belgian workforce. Staff Take A-B InBev Managers Hostage In Belgium

Reports from Belgium have suggested that a dozen managers at an Anheuser-Busch InBev brewery in Belgium have been taken hostage after the company announced plans to slash their Belgian workforce by ten per cent. The world's largest brewer announced the staff cuts overnight, Australian time, pointing to lower demand in their home country. The cuts will see around 300 people lose their jobs. The news has not been taken well, with local media reporting that as many as a dozen managers may be being held in an office room next door to the plant. [...more]

Soave Enterprises close to selling Chicago-area distributorships to Anheuser-Busch InBev

Soave Enterprises close to selling Chicago-area distributorships to Anheuser-Busch InBev

Crain's Detroit Business has learned Detroit-based Soave Enterprises Inc. is close to selling its 70 percent interest in its Anheuser-Busch distributorships in the Chicago area to Anheuser-Busch InBev N.V./S.A., which already owns the remaining 30 percent. The distributorships, branded as City Beverage-Illinois, primarily serve Chicago's South Loop and surrounding suburbs. City Beverage-Illinois distributes more than 19 million cases of Anheuser-Busch, Inbev, Crown, Guinness, Gambrinus and other brands in the market. It is one of the largest Anheuser-Busch distributors in the country. The transaction is expected to close next year. Since Anheuser-Busch was acquired by Belgium-based InBev in November 2008 to create Anheuser-Busch InBev, the company has said it was interested in bringing its distributorships under company ownership, a business model which is typical for its other brands. Large U.S. brewers have been challenged in the current economy and Anheuser-Busch InBev is reported to have suffered sales losses in most of its major markets with the exception of Chicago. Crain's Chicago Business reported last summer that AB InBev was steadily acquiring Chicago-area distributorships and was looking to buy more. The market, according to Crain's Chicago, is the largest where Budweiser is not the best-selling beer. [...more]

Will Bud Family Megabranding Backfire On Anheuser-Busch?

Will Bud Family Megabranding Backfire On Anheuser-Busch?

About 18 months ago, Anheuser-Busch executives started publicly touting a new strategy to boost sales and profits: Adding new line extensions to Bud Light and Budweiser. Each big beer would be the main component of a "megabrand." Bud Light would get Bud Light Lime and - later - Bud Light Golden Wheat; Budweiser got Budweiser American Ale as a reinforcement. The strategy makes sense to lots of observers. Bud Light Golden Wheat is in the midst of a big roll-out, and Bud Light Lime was one of the biggest new beer launches of the last few years. Count Pete Reid, publisher of Modern Brewery Age, among the advocates of the strategy. "Budweiser is a declining brand, there's no getting around it," said Reid. "But they've propped up the flagship, largely because of family pride. They're going to have to support that brand if they want it to stay an iconic brand." [...more]

Anheuser Busch Releasing Entire Lineup Of 55 Calorie Beers

Anheuser Busch Releasing Entire Lineup Of 55 Calorie Beers

Miller’s 64 calorie beer, MGD64, has turned out to be a commercial success, so like movies about mall cops, Anheuser-Busch is entering the calorie labeled beer world as well with, wait for it, Budweiser Select 55, which should hit shelves later this year in select markets. AdAge is reporting that the new, low calorie beer was “described by an impressed major-market wholesaler as ‘not as watery as you’d think’.” Really? REALLY? At least PRETEND to care what’s in the can. I get it, marketing’s important, but it’s beer people. Not orange juice. Not water. It’s effing beer. If you have to, drink a beer with more than 55 calories and then go for a walk or something. [...more]
