The Analytical Chemist role is a laboratory based role and will include the following responsibilities: To carry out responsibilities in accordance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and to implement appropriate safety procedures in the laboratory. Manage (calibration, validation, service/maintenance) key analytical systems within the GBTC laboratory including GC, GC-MS, HPLC, IC and other laboratory based instrumental analysis systems. Develop new methodologies to extend the analytical capability of the GBTC laboratory to support quality improvement and other key business projects and initiatives. Magners Absorbs Cider Duty Hike

Irish cider Magners has announced it will absorb the 13% hike in cider duty. Magners launched a press campaign in the Metro this morning announcing its move, following the Chancellor's decision to hike duty on cider 10% above inflation from midnight on Sunday. The Chancellor said this was to address the "anomaly" in the tax system in regard to cider. Magners is also using social networking site Facebook and micro-blogging site Twitter to communicate the message. [...more]

50 Britvic Jobs Under Threat

Up to 50 jobs could go at Britvic NI, it has emerged. And with a large factory located on the Castlereagh Road, the move has been described as a "bad blow" by East Belfast MLA Robin Newton. The soft drinks business currently employs 139 workers in Belfast, with a further 17 employed at a site in Omagh. If the move goes ahead it is understood at least 50 jobs will go across the two plants. A consultation period with staff has now begun. The news came last weekend as Cantrell & Cochrane (C&C) decided not to renew the distribution and logistics contract it has with Britvic Northern Ireland. [...more]

Guinness Plant Fire ‘Under Control’

Crews from six units of the Dublin Fire Brigade and aerial appliances successfully battled to bring the fire under control and stop it from spreading to a nearby ammonia plant. It is understood the blaze broke out when building materials being used by workmen to repair a felt roof with a torch caught fire. A spokeswoman for Guinness said there was a small fire in a rarely used building where empty storage tanks are kept. [...more]

C&C Unable To Rule Out Job Losses After Gaymer’s Purchase

Stephen Glancey, chief operating officer of C&C Group, owner of Magners said he is unable to rule-out job losses as the result of its purchase of rival cider maker, Gaymer Cider Company. Speaking at a press conference in Dublin, following the £45m acquistion, Glancey said that while a consultation was ongoing, the aim was to continue to develop both Magners and Gaymer's brands, but cut costs by reducing funds spent on distribution. Glancey added the move to acquire the Shepton Mallet-based cider maker from Constellation Brands was driven by a need to strengthen the business through a portfolio of products covering all sectors of the market. Constellation Brands,announced today that it has entered into an agreement to sell its Gaymer Cider Company business to C&C Group PLC of Dublin Ireland for 45 million pounds Sterling, or approximately $70 million, subject to closing adjustments. New Malt Whisky Definition To Affect Loch Lomond Operations

May have to shut down some of its environment friendly production processes. Loch Lomond Distillery, a maker of blended whisky based in Alexandria near Glasgow, is soliciting support to overturn plans which would make the industry less competitive and less environmentally friendly. A new definition of 'Scotch malt whisky', which is going to be enforced with effect from November 23 will bind producers such as Loch Lomond to abandon efforts to reduce energy waste and help combat climate change. Dingle Distillery to Go Ahead

Details of Ireland's newest distillery, The Dingle Whiskey Distillery, were announced recently in Dingle. The new business venture is being driven by serial entrepreneur and founder of the well-known PorterHouse bars and microbrewery operation (and Lillie's Bordello proprietor) Oliver Hughes together with local Kerry businessman Jerry O'Sullivan. Udaras na Gaeltachta is assisting the project and the Dingle distillery represents the first distillery to open on the island of Ireland for 200 years. The businessmen have decided to invest their own funds and are to roll out a Business Expansion Scheme (BES) that will see a distillery opening on the site of the Old Creamery building. The project will raise €1.7 million in the coming weeks with a substantial amount being contributed by the promoters themselves. [...more]
