Magners Absorbs Cider Duty Hike

Irish cider Magners has announced it will absorb the 13% hike in cider duty. Magners launched a press campaign in the Metro this morning announcing its move, following the Chancellor's decision to hike duty on cider 10% above inflation from midnight on Sunday. The Chancellor said this was to address the "anomaly" in the tax system in regard to cider. Magners is also using social networking site Facebook and micro-blogging site Twitter to communicate the message. [...more]

Magners manufacturer to Buy up English Brands

The Gaymer Cider Company is an English company who produce the brands Blackthorn, Olde English and Gaymers ciders, while Constellation Brands Inc. based in Victor, New York is the leading producer of premium wines in the world. The transaction will give the C&C Group a broad portfolio of UK cider brands, a new cider production facility in Somerset and a distribution warehouse in Bristol. The deal is expected to be complete by mid-January 2010, following consultation with employees. As well as giving the Magners producer control over the Blackthorn, Olde English and Gaymers brands, C&C will also receive a range of value cider brands and 'own label' products for UK grocers. Molson Coors And C&C Group Agree New Magners Contract

Molson Coors UK and C&C Group have agreed in principle to extend the distribution contract for draught Magners in England and Wales. It is planned that C&C Group will have the distribution rights for Scotland and Multiple On Trade (MOT) from 1st January 2010. In 2008, Molson Coors agreed with the C&C Group to act as exclusive distributor for Draught Magners in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) on trade. Following the acquisition by the C&C Group of the Irish, Northern Irish and Scottish assets of AB InBev, both parties have agreed to continue the existing arrangement and allow Molson Coors to help build the brand. Tony Gibbons, director of sales at Molson Coors (UK) said: "Molson Coors (UK) track record in creating effective brand-building partnerships and strong routes to market were key to C&C Group's choice of exclusive partner in developing draught Magners in the UK. New Fruit Flavoured Magners Being Trialled In Ireland

A new fruit flavoured variety of Magners named Bulmers Berry is currently being trialled in the on-trade in Ireland, ahead of a wider release across the UK in spring. The new flavour, which is in the testing and research stage of development, has been made available to a number of bars in Dublin. C&C, owners of Magners, would not comment on the trial but a rival in the flavoured cider market told The Publican the product had been seen in a number of bars in the Dublin area. [...more]
