SAB Miller Withdrew Brand Over Label Concerns

SAB Miller stopped importing one of of its brands because it did not contain enough health and unit information. The global brewer said that is just how seriously it takes the voluntary labelling scheme. It re-iterated that all of its UK brands contain the five key elements agreed voluntarily with the Government - unit information, pregnancy advice, a message about responsible drinking, a logo and link for Drinkaware and the NHS recommended limits. It comes as the Government warned yesterday that the industry was "failing" on labelling and launched a consultation on whether legislation was required. [...more]

SABMiller: South Africa Beer Operations Unaffected By Strike

JOHANNESBURG - SABMiller PLC said Monday its beer operations in South Africa are operating as usual, unaffected by a strike over pay at the company's soft drinks unit. About 120 workers at South African Breweries Ltd., which produces brands including Castle Lager and Miller Genuine Draft, joined a rally held by some 600 members of the Food and Allied Worker's Union in the Johannesburg suburb of Sandton, the company said. The company said only about 45% of unionized FAWU members have joined the strike that began Dec. 22, primarily at its Amalgamated Beverage Industries Ltd. unit, one of the largest producers and distributors ofCoca-Cola Co. Graham Mackay On The Global Beer Industry

Graham Mackay On The Global Beer Industry

SABMiller head Graham Mackay had a major interview in The Times yesterday. This is the man who told us the craft beer surge would fade: "It's inevitable." And after almost every beer blogger and beer website forum denizen had at him, he passed from their consciousness. He's big beer, after all. Mackay is one of the brightest people in the business, a business that is filled with very bright people, especially at the top. I found the interview -- including a casually tossed-off T.S. Eliot quote -- fascinating. Especially this, about the global consolidation of the beer market. I've marked the parts I find particularly interesting. [...more]
