Highland Park has released four new whiskies exclusive to global travel retail.
The Vintage Editions range consists initially of four Highland Park single malt whiskies distilled in 1998, 1994, 1990 and 1973.
Max McFarlane, whisky maker, said: "The starting point for this range was to look into our maturing stocks to find sherry seasoned casks which would showcase different dimensions of the classic Highland Park profile of honey sweetness and aromatic peat. Gordon & MacPhail has released a 70 year old single malt whisky.
Mortlach, the oldest in a new series by G&M called Generations, will cost £10,000 for a standard bottle and £2,500 for a 20cl. There are 54 standard bottles and 162 20cl bottles.
The product was unveiled at Edinburgh Castle on the 70th day on 2010 (March 11).
According to Michael Urquhart, 3rd generation G&M, this is the oldest single cask of scotch malt ever to be bottled and offered for sale.
In 1938, a sherry hogshead was filled at the Mortlach distillery - the first distillery to be built in Dufftown. It was bottled in 2008 and went on sale yesterday (March11). The product is 46.1%abv and no pre-sales were made before the launch. Tennent's lager has backed plans by the Scottish government to enforce a minimum price on alcohol.
Mike Lees, managing director of Tennent Caledonian, said that the move would help to tackle Scotland's problem with alcohol.
"In particular, there is an issue with a small group of consumers who purchase cheap alcohol in bulk, drink excessively at home and then go out into pubs and clubs and get into difficulties," Mr Lees explained.
He went on to say that the company would support the proposals so long as they were fair and proportionate and suggested that high-strength alcoholic beverages should be the main focus. [...more]
The Macallan is a single malt Scotch whisky, produced at Macallan Distillery near Easter Elchies House, at Craigellachie in the Speyside region. Originally, The Macallan was only matured in oak sherry casks brought to the distillery from Jerez, Spain. Beginning in 2004, The Macallan introduced a new main product, the Fine Oak series, with the whisky mellowed in bourbon oak casks as well as sherry ones.
In 2007, a bottle of 1926 vintage The Macallan was sold at a Christie's auction for $54,000, making it one of the most expensive bottles of liquor ever sold. [...more]
Scottish brewery BrewDog is planning to open a chain of pubs by the end of 2010.
The brewery's owners said that they want to build on the "rapid growth" that the Aberdeen-based brewery has been experiencing.
In October 2009, BrewDog announced that it had bought a bar called the Marischal in Aberdeen.
"This is going to be home of the very first BrewDog brew-pub. Blending punk-rock, utilitarianism and philosophy, the BrewDog Bar will be exciting imaginations from February 2010," the owners said in their blog. [...more]

Highland Spring has bought Greencore’s loss-making bottled water business for £17.5m.
The deal which includes Campsie Spring in Lennoxtown, near Glasgow, and Blaen Twyni in Wales will make Highland Spring the UK’s biggest bottled water company. It will have 400 employees, five bottling plants and 12 production lines with a capacity of 700 million litres a year. [...more]
Cooley Distillery has released a limited bottling of the new Spirit of Kilbeggan distilled by a 19th Century refurbished still now in operation in the Old Kilbeggan Distillery in County Westmeath.
The Old Kilbeggan Distillery is the oldest distillery in the world and to mark its 250th anniversary, a pot still from the 19th Century was refurbished with distilling recommencing on the 19th of March 2007. This is now the oldest pot still in use in the world and revives a traditional age-old style of distillation not seen in Ireland for many years. Earlier this year a second pot still, hand-crafted by Forsyth’s Copper Smiths of Scotland to match the original still, was commissioned. WILLIAM Grant & Sons, the family-owned distiller and one of Scotland's largest private companies, has reported record profits boosted by sales of non whisky spirits such as Hendrick's Gin and Sailor Jerry spiced rum.
The distiller, which also makes Glenfiddich single malt whisky and Grant's blended Scotch, said its best financial performance yet was driven by a positive trading environment for its core brands and an improved mix for spirit sales. [...more]
A new limited edition carton has been launched by The Famous Grouse which was designed by design company Timorous Beasties as the brand embarks on its Winter Grouse Season campaign ahead of St Andrew's Day.
