Claymore Moves Into on-Trade

Claymore Scotch whisky has been made available to the on-trade for the first time. One of the UK's biggest budget Scotch brands, it is available in a range of formats in the off-trade but will be introduced to the on-trade in a 1.5-litre bottle following demand from licensees, according to producer Whyte & Mackay. The brand is also celebrating its 120th anniversary this year and has undergone a redesign to give it better back-bar standout. Edrington Buys Cutty Sark

Edrington is to buy the Cutty Sark blended scotch whisky brand and Berry Bros acquires the Glenrothes single malt whisky The Edrington Group which makes The Famous Grouse and The Macallan, is to buy the blended scotch whisky brand Cutty Sark from Berry Bros & Rudd (BB&R) while Berrys is to acquire The Glenrothes single malt brand. Edrington has been supplying blended whisky for the Cutty Sark brand for more than 70 years and is responsible for all aspects of production of Cutty Sark. Edrington is to acquire all Cutty Sark distribution contracts in force at the time of completion, by April. The Edrington sales-and-distribution alliance (Maxxium) will continue to distribute The Glenrothes in key international markets and is also expected to provide a distribution option for other brands within BB&R's super-premium spirits portfolio. Diageo Launches New Whisky

Diageo has launched a new Buchanan's Scotch whisky in Mexico. Buchanan's Master is a new blended Scotch that sits between Buchanan's 12 year old and Buchanan's 18 year old. Scotch whisky set for Burns Night

Diageo is anticipating an increase in sales of Talisker, following a Burns Night push. Burns Night takes place on 25 January and is a celebration of the life of Scottish poet Robert Burns. In the UK, Diageo is running a Talisker campaign that is to result in 500 Burn's Night celebrations up and down the country. Talisker sales in the UK have increased from 19.7k 9L cases in 2007 to 25k in 2009. [...more]

Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg to Expand

Steve Beshear and Cabinet for Economic Development Secretary Larry Hayes today announced Kentucky-based Rare Breed Distilling will construct a new 20,000 space barrel storage warehouse at its Wild Turkey distillery in Lawrenceburg. This new project will add to Wild Turkey's storage capacity for its maturing whiskey products and will entail a nearly $2.3 million investment in the Commonwealth. "Kentucky is pleased to partner with Rare Breed Distilling on its latest expansion at the Wild Turkey distillery in Lawrenceburg," said Gov. Beshear. "The nearly $2.3 million investment will help to further enhance one of Kentucky's signature industries and provide a positive economic impact in the community." In 2007, Wild Turkey, a manufacturer of several Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey products, as well as other premium quality distilled spirits offerings, announced plans to build a new and larger distillery on its site in Anderson County to keep pace with projected increases in the global demand for the plant's products. The new distillery is currently under construction and scheduled to begin operation in late 2010. For the new warehouse project, Rare Breed Distilling LLC has recently been approved by the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority for tax incentives up to $40,000 under the Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act (KEIA). KEIA allows approved companies to recoup Kentucky sales and use tax on construction and building costs. [...more]

Pernod Ricard-owned blended Scotch whisky brand is launching a bottle that flashes like a graphic equaliser in time to the music. Designed by London-based packaging agency The Core, the Ballantine's Finest self-illuminating bottle, which can be powered by batteries or mains, is only available to the on-trade. The bottle design is modelled on a graphic equaliser, the dark blue spray coated bottle appears to react to the tonal quality of audio passing through it, by lighting up intermittently to achieve back-of-bar standout. Jack Daniel's Properties Inc., the brand licensing unit of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, is launching a line of Jack Daniel's ready-to-eat meat entrees available at grocery and club stores. The foods, which are being produced by Monticello, Calif.-based Completely Fresh Foods Inc., include baby back ribs, roasted beef brisket, pork loin, barbecue pulled pork and barbecue pulled chicken. They will be made using Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey. [...more]
