Ballantine’s whisky Signs Top Golf stars

Blended scotch whisky Ballantine's has signed three top golf stars to take part in the Ballantine's Championship. They include three-time Major winner Ernie Els, PGA Tour star Anthony Kim and current world No 10 Henrik Stenson. They will be joined in the €2.2 million event by Miguel Angel Jiménez and the tournament's 2008 champion and Ballantine's ambassador, Graeme McDowell. The Ballantine's Championship, which is hosted on the island of Jeju from 22-25 April, is Asia's fourth biggest golf tournament and, according to Ballantine's, the largest sporting event in Korea. Whisky Roofs Collapse Under Weight of Snow

Two Chivas Regal sites in Speyside have been damaged after roofs collapsed on its warehouses under the weight of heavy snow. The buildings that are used for holding stocks of whisky have been shut-down because of structural damage that has occurred as a result. The first incident at the Pernod Ricard owned company occurred on January 5, there were further incidents on January 6 and 7 at its two sites in Mulben and Keith. De-icing is currently being carried out via-helicopters to prevent further damage. There have been no injuries or spirit losses. The buildings will remain closed until a full assessment has been carried out to gauge the exact number of warehouses that have been affected.A Chivas Regal spokesman said: "We are experiencing issues with some of our warehouse roofs under the weight of snow and ice. The Macallan is a single malt Scotch whisky, produced at Macallan Distillery near Easter Elchies House, at Craigellachie in the Speyside region. Originally, The Macallan was only matured in oak sherry casks brought to the distillery from Jerez, Spain. Beginning in 2004, The Macallan introduced a new main product, the Fine Oak series, with the whisky mellowed in bourbon oak casks as well as sherry ones. In 2007, a bottle of 1926 vintage The Macallan was sold at a Christie's auction for $54,000, making it one of the most expensive bottles of liquor ever sold. [...more]

Scotch whisky Cutty Sark has ended its UK distribution arrangement with Emporia Brands Ltd after two years. With immediate effect, UK distribution of Cutty Sark will be undertaken by Berry Bros. & Rudd. James Rackham, chairman of Emporia Brands said: "I am very proud of our work on Cutty Sark. Although the UK market for blended Scotch whisky has been declining for a number of years, we targeted the premium sector with Cutty Sark and achieved some excellent results, especially in the London area. Pernod Ricard premium spirits arm Chivas Brothers has signed up Ryder Cup golfer Graeme McDowell as its new global brand ambassador for Ballantine's whisky. Northern Irishman McDowell - winner of the inaugural Ballantine's Championship in Korea in 2008 - will now wear the Ballantine's logo on his sleeve at all tournaments in which he plays. Upping its stakes in the world of professional golf, Chivas Bros has also recently signed a sponsorship deal for Ballantine's with the Omega Mission Hill World Cup in China. A crackdown on counterfeit Scotch whisky will be launched this week. From tomorrow, port authorities will impound cheap foreign spirits claiming to be the real thing and slap fines on the importers. Tougher regulations target brands from India and China with Scottishsounding names such as Red Scot and Glen Highland Green. They will impose strict rules on using the names of distilleries and distillers on labels. May have to shut down some of its environment friendly production processes. Loch Lomond Distillery, a maker of blended whisky based in Alexandria near Glasgow, is soliciting support to overturn plans which would make the industry less competitive and less environmentally friendly. A new definition of 'Scotch malt whisky', which is going to be enforced with effect from November 23 will bind producers such as Loch Lomond to abandon efforts to reduce energy waste and help combat climate change. William Grant -Sons Whisky Distiller Reports Record £129m Profit

WILLIAM Grant & Sons, the family-owned distiller and one of Scotland's largest private companies, has reported record profits boosted by sales of non whisky spirits such as Hendrick's Gin and Sailor Jerry spiced rum. The distiller, which also makes Glenfiddich single malt whisky and Grant's blended Scotch, said its best financial performance yet was driven by a positive trading environment for its core brands and an improved mix for spirit sales.
